20. Be Relaxed. Be Ready.

 #66Challenge

Yesterday I decided it was time to walk a labyrinth, as I had some things on my mind that I thought a good meditative walk would resolve.

Before I went, I pulled out my Labyrinth Journal, which I've been writing in after just about every labyrinth walk since December 2006. In it I found my last labyrinth walk on February 15, 2020.

The photo of the card below is from a deck I have called Perfect Calm cards. On the back of the card is a little piece of writing about Taking Responsibility.

In a reflection I wrote, I said I felt the card was telling me to relax and keep calm even when things seem to be falling apart. This was just a few weeks after my husband had a mild stroke, and a few weeks before the world would be in a full-blown global pandemic. At the time I walked the labyrinth, Coronavirus was just a blip on my radar, so I know I wasn't writing about it.

I also wrote these words about the card:

The crossroads card brought to mind that I very well could be coming to a transition...Anything can change at any time. The message from the labyrinth is Be Relaxed. Be Ready.

Fast forward to the day I reflected on "Vienna," which I wrote about in the previous post. I know cultural anthropologist and mythologist Michael Meade talks a lot about genius, so I went to find a video about that, since Billy Joel had mentioned it. I came upon a video called "Run Toward the Roar," and I know I've heard the story before, and thought I'd check it out once more.

This is an ancient story about how the elders in Africa would teach the young warriors to hunt. They taught them that the old lions, the ones that were no longer able to run fast, would sit in the tall grasses. The younger lions would be across the way, in another area of grass. When the herds made their way toward the lions, the old lions would roar loudly -- causing the herd to run to where the more vital and able lions were waiting. They taught their young warriors to "Go toward the roar."

Fast forward to now. It is no secret the education system is in a huge crisis, and even I have been a victim of the dysfunction, a teacher looking to perhaps retire or to at least run away as fast as I can. It took a complete mental and physical breakdown (with time away) to find my direction.

Michael Meade says right now the culture as a whole is going through a collective rite of passage. I believe this applies directly to teachers, as well as many other issues we are facing. Here is the way he describes it:

A group of people begin to realize that the world as we imagine it, the worldview that we inherited, does not work anymore. It doesn't solve most people's problems, and in this case, it destroys the ecosystems and things like that, so it's a worldview that cannot, in the long run, be life-sustaining. And there's an old idea that humans come into the world when the life-support system of the womb collapses...Now we consider the way we view the world, the womb that we used to be in, the one we call the modern world or the western world, no longer works as a sustaining system for either culture or for nature. We need to exit from the womb and go towards what seems to be the roar, but it also is the direction where we might be able to imagine the next world that is more sustainable and inclusive....We are like the young people told by the elders to run to the roar.

What he is speaking of 100% applies to education. The "womb" has been deteriorating for a long time, and we did little to adjust. Now we are in a major crisis that HAS to be re-imagined by the collective. The things we are doing DO NOT WORK. Teachers are on the front line and are suffering from the lack of life-support. This is devastating for our entire culture.

The issue is that educators are bailing because it has gotten completely unsustainable for so many (and I know...I was there, and who knows, could end up there again.) The sad part is there is a lot of blame and talking about the problems, but not a lot of people talking about any real solutions. At least not that I've heard, and I've been paying attention!

So, back to February 15, 2020. Yes, I sensed there were changes, but not at all as we were confronted with. I recall the many difficulties and dark days during that spring, the separation from each other, and all the other devastating affects. We said then we'd have to do something different, that this was a signal to transition and re-vision education. Instead, we just have more of the same, this constant drumbeat to "return to normal," but now with a whole additional cache of unskilled behaviors, unbelievable stresses, and mental health issues among our young learners.

Guided by the many teachings that are coming my way, I know that my job is to go toward the roar. Sometimes I feel I am terribly alone in this endeavor, and I sometimes question my sanity. Yet...I know this is what I need to do. I feel my instructions from Spirit are clear.

This has been a good week to reflect on many of these things, and many more I haven't written here yet. Somehow I know I am exactly where I'm supposed to be. My mission has become even clearer as I've progressed through the many messages and spiritual encouragements coming my way.

I suppose you can say that in late October I stood at the crossroads and was ready to just run off into the field...but now I have chosen my direction, and I'm committed. And the crossroads card taught me something else: Be Relaxed. Be Ready.

I know I have a mission to fulfill

School of Love (7 Lines/7 Days #79)

 #108Weeks

November 14-20, 2021

A three hour lunch with a friend brought energy and renewed determination.

The world is nothing but a school of love.

My angel spirit has been direct--listen for guidance. Following those instructions diligently.

Remembering to roll with the waves of the ocean.

Begged my AP again for help with 9th period, and I finally got it.
The paraprofessional arrived and received the full-blown experience since all students were present,
complete with a spilled bottle of glitter.
(I hate pep rally days.)

5th period surprised me when they chose Bill Withers' song "Just the Two of Us" as their team song.

Messages (7 Lines/7 Days #46)

 #108Weeks

March 28-April 3, 2021

Those who love me come to my side.

My inner voice spoke: Don't do one more thing. You're killing yourself.

Love what you love.

I am a writer: this is not a revelation, but a confirmation.

I'm giving myself too much work. I need a release valve.

I am a magnet for good.

I woke at 4 a.m. today and listened to the silence.

Spring Break (7 Lines/7 Days #44)

 #108Weeks

March 14-20, 2021

We're always serving and receiving -- it goes both ways

Watching Mickey Guyton sing "Black Like Me" on the Grammy Awards was to bear witness and learn again.

It's important to celebrate even when we think there is nothing to celebrate.

I've read 17 out of the 73 books (my target this year), but only 3 were written by women. I now will track that and get a bit of balance!

The Van Gogh Alive was amazing. I cried when surrounded by sunflowers, "Ava Maria" playing. Wonderful time with my fascinating friends!

Sadly, Jim's healthy issue is not resolving despite our efforts

The Universe responds to my dreams and needs

Sigh of Relief (7 Lines/ 7 Days #22)

 #108Weeks

October 11 - 17, 2020

It was with dedicated time and energy I got every bit of grading done.

A seriously monumental feat.

When I remember to let her, God is my guide always.

We have got to heal...for our children...for our democracy...for all of us.

I feel like I'm finally getting to know the ins and outs of these kids.

Yesterday I implemented a policy to stop the ridiculous practice of turning in blank documents.

Then I came up with a "Pathway to Success" to help failing kids. I could hear a collective sigh of relief.

Only

Today I read David Kirby's poem "Look, Slavs" and loved the ending line:

Only people who aren't us can tell us who we are.

I decided to make a poem from this -- one we often call an "Inner Voice" poem, for lack of a better term.  However, I recently learned these are called spine poems, which makes perfect sense.

Only a new year can bring this commitment among
people, as we think we can and will be better.
Who doesn't love a new beginning?
Aren't we always getting tired of repetition? It's in
us to want to explore the new.

Can you tell we are Americans? Can you
tell we never want to stop? Look at all Manifest Destiny gave
us! There was not tiring out. And those
who made the trips across the plains and mountains know better than
we the true cost. They may have searched and found gold, but we
are the beneficiaries, the ones who glitter, the ones who want everything new.

Handful of Stars

Inspired by the first line in Mary Biddinger's poem "Empty Locket Syndrome" -- Everything is easy when you don't try.

Everything isn't getting accomplished and that

is no surprise. When was I ever reasonable about goals? If they were

easy they wouldn't be goals -- right? Something to target and go for

when you want to feel progress is being made

you aim high and grab a few stars, as they say, but

don't confuse a handful of stars with a life well-lived...

try rest and silence, nature and art.  They are the true source of everything.

So Much Promise (the final poems!)

DEPTH
Don't underestimate him
Ever. Colin is a deep
Purveyor of knowledge,
Thorough explanation and insights.
He mines the depths for gold.

RETURN
Revenue of knowledge
Earned every day, Dominik
Travels back when
Understanding gets lost,
Recovering and responding, his
Natural approach to learning.

BLINK
Blazing his own trail
Lightning fast decisions
Insisting and innocent
Nico reminds us of a
Kaleidoscope ever-changing.

ALIVE
Ask and you'll receive
Listen and you'll hear
In Gabe's life, this is the
Vision to live by, the way to
Everything good and secure.

Pay Attention
Rey might go unseen
at times, a river
of focus and quiet, of
respect in the air
around him, and above.

SECRET
She is a whisperer
Ever smiling
Catching the light
Resisting nothing
Ever being Yesenia
Trusting and kind.

CLIMB
Clambering up the academic hill
Like the good student h
Is, Maurice ascends,
Motivated to give his
Best to any challenge.

LEVEL
Lighthearted and friendly
Enter William, keeper of in-
Visibility, creator of
Extraordinary balance,
Level, calm, and steady.

Fields
Walter is walking
and listening in
silence, his mind the
open field
to find himself at one,
to discover this day.

Mystery Diamond
Who is she, this diamond who
can open herself up to anyone who cares to
guess who she is, this Dya'Mond,
the kind one to all, the one who bears
mysteries, who tells it true.

MOVING
Mark this place for Richard
On track for all his goals,
Varies his patterns little,
Instant inquiry when needed,
No many have to
Give what he has to give,

or gain what he will gain.

READY
Remarkably intelligent
Elects to stay focused
Angled to succeed
Directed and determined
You, Chris, ready for anything.

Golden Treasure
Like so many other young people, Jaxson has a
golden way about him, a buried
treasure of wisdom that
he imparts to us on occasion when he's
willing to take us with him and
travel in that direction

Below the Surface, Part One

Well, it has been a long time since I've sat down to post the poems. Best laid plans said I'd get it done this week. Ha! Lots of poems to post -- this is only about a quarter of them, but this is all the time I want to donate right now. The gorgeous weather is calling me for a walk, and my mandolin is calling me to play.

SMOOTH
Seemingly without tension
Moving through everything effortlessly
Centered on task always
On point without fail
Tyler glides through the day
He makes it look so easy

WINGS
For Ashley
"Welcome to my world" she seems to say
In the way she looks at you
Never giving everything away
Growing and gathering, holding her
Superpowers close, waiting to take flight

The Future Speaks
Say you are incredibly gifted,
that the world around is
far from form-fitting,
in fact it can be downright uncomfortable.
The way Josh moves tells me the
Future speaks to him now
and he listens
and moves accordingly.

 PROMISE
Perhaps it's the way he
Rests easy wherever he is;
Others gather around.
Maybe it's his singular focus,
Intense and determined.
Safe to say, Lex has promise,
Evident in everything he does.

BEGIN
Both clever and courageous, and
Easy to like, Victor
Gains favor with his peers,
Imagines a future for himself,
Numbers the triumphs to come.

 FOREVER
Feathery light and poised
Open to going beyond
Roundabouts don't confound
Even-tempered and solid
Veracious and vivid Natalee
Ever moving forward and up
Reaching for the higher place

The Center
Standing in the middle,
turning by degrees,
Sam is the center.
The full moon, round, white blaze
quiet, unhurried spin;
wheel and compass,
axis and reel.

Clarity

Inner Voice poem inspired by the Nelly Sachs line:

How slowly we flash up in clarity.

How the tiny steps we take
slowly move us to the places
we need to be. Things are static, then
flash! the shift is recognized,
up from what we know, where we stand
in the present, the now, with increasing
clarity of what surrounds us,

                             the actions we must take.

Independent Voices

The Art of Being Hermoine
A girl who can make art,
certain that it is time well spent, her
way of being Hermoine.
In this way she lifts and lays claim.
The message from her is silently consistent:
"World be what it is -- I am here."

BALANCE
Boys will be boys it is said, just
A way to adjust to what boys do,
Like make jokes about each other
All day long -- literally. Jipson
Never stops being his boyish self, yet
Can balance between that and his academics,
Ever walking the edge of middle school acceptance.

CENTER
Central to Jose's life is
Ever-increasing knowledge and focus,
Never pivoting off the central
Tenets of the classroom: to be
Engaged and participatory, to
Reap the benefits of each lesson.

DIGGING
Does anyone come more alive?
Intrigued by every bit of everything,
Growing his thoughts,
Growing his connections
Into the depths, Rider digs
Never giving up until we all
Grasp his delicious insight.

LOYAL
Lions and lotus flowers are
Outward symbols of loyalty.
You might think they conflict, but
Allow me to introduce you to Jacqueline:
Lion of determination, flower of gentleness.

Reaching High
Voice -- Allison has it
coming through loud and clear,
through her perfect mind, thinking
her thoughts, expanding outward
like the branches of a tree,
roots down, reaching high.

HAPPY
High-spirited and cheerful, Crystal is
Animated in a joyful way
Pleased at her progress
Prepared for what's next
Young in age, seasoned in spirit.

SHINE
Soccer and academic star
His beaming smile lighting his path
Interested, focused, all things
New to Miguel, he radiates an
External fire generated from within.

Persuasive Wind
Emma is all that is whole
in a person, much like a tree,
she is steady and strong, leans
on a rare occasion as needed; in
her way she gives her gifts, the
thoughtful fruit, the persuasive wind.

METEOR
Might be a small matter, but when he
Enters your atmosphere, Jimmy
Tracks like a streak of light
Expressing his unique perspective that
Only he can see, that smile, that
Reason to treasure his presence.

Aretha sings "O Tannenbaum"

Today I read a poem by Twyla M. Hansen called "Moonrise, Aurora, Nebraska."  These lines stood out:

Look, life is like this, filled
with moments of meaning

and I decided to write an Inner Voice poem, (which also is a monostich, as it turns out) with some additions on the end.

Look, I heard Aretha sing and thought of her
life gone, how the world
is less for the loss of her voice,
like so many who have gone before
this way, we are enchanted and
filled with their presence
with their voices and spirits,
moments in time we treasure,
of memories and connection, bringing
meaning to our daily existence
                         through the grace of music
                         through our calm attention
                         through the lingering silence

Dimensions

This collection includes all sorts of poems: Inner Voice, Golden Shovel, and Acrostic

Bethsada Believes

Comes to us as curious
Lifetime of deep interest
And immersion, Bethsada
lost in what engrosses her,
been happy to follow that path,
finds herself in the perfect place.

Leading and Lifting

Luis brings with him a wholeness
that enhances our life
in the classroom. He led
the way from the start, celebrating
being a reader, lifting his youth
to new heights.

NORTH

Not one to ever give up, Jefferson takes
Obstacles as the challenge they are meant to be,
Renewing the strength of his character and centering him
Trusting the long road has a purpose and
Holds the promise to the future he deserves.

 POETRY

Poetry in motion, as they say
On display with beauty, language, and expression
Enter Kristi, a quiet marvel
Tracing her outline in our class
Reaping the benefits of learning, saying
Yes to her own sound and rhythm.

HEART

Hugs, hugs, hugs
Everywhere she goes, Jasmin's
Arms reach for others
Reveling in embrace, showing her
Thoughtful love and acceptance.

LIFTED

Lithe and lifelong learner
Interested and introspective, Ke'ahna
Favors thinking for herself
Trusting her mind implicitly
Expecting to succeed
Dividend earned from hard work.

SPEAK

Saying what is on his mind
Preferring one-on-one conversations
Expressing his opinion, his daily challenges
Austin provides for us a
Key into his perspective of the world.

WORDS
(for Josh)

Wherever he goes
Opinions are given
Reasons and comments
Doesn't doubt himself
Steady and strong.

Spectrum 2

More student poems using one or more of these forms: Golden Shovel, Found, or Inner Voice

Swirling Light

Oscillating, gliding, spinning
Isabella takes it slow
Her smile sends out a beam
of acceptance, love of life, of
glitter and swirling light.

She is warm sky,
blinking mirror,
an illuminating lighthouse.

Lesley Surprises

Lesley surprises when we discover
she has a creative brilliance; it's
evident when she come out of the shadow
she maintains around herself, and
takes the chance on breaking the silence.

Maddenly Elusive

Seth, oh Seth, can be maddenly
contrary, knows the game, elusive
and hard to pin down, yet
he baits the teachers endlessly,
so to doubt him is tempting...

but truly unnecessary.

 Winding Stream

In the morning it's like
any other day, the school her world,
and the day hers to cruise.
This, of course, is well before
I see her in class, bright smile, the
sunshine to any rain
which may have come before;
Skylar is a winding stream of wonderful.

Silver Sun

Morning arrives, and J'myah, too
Sun in her eyes, her smile
Turns to the focus, always with us
Silver friendships surround her
On her way to see dreams come true
Pointed toward that which matters most.

 Classic Hero

Ash is a mirror, and on
most mornings you'll wake
feeling not particularly heroic,
but willing to glisten.
Easy listening, well-mannered, subdued grin
Fierce attention to dirt one might possess.
You are classical, Santiago,
blue crystals ground-fine
fresh, newly-heard harmonies.

Playground

To Ayden the world is a playground.
He has no time to ask hard questions,
like whether intellligence exists.
What's the point when activity awaits?
Sagas rising and falling to the orbs of jump ropes,
grasping monkey bars
the mighty hero of recess
victorious on imagined battlefields.

Directions
Found poem for Jayla

Start climbing
the going gets steep
find the agreeable rock to sit on
see the light pouring down
breaking into shapes and tones
hear nothing but birdsong
the voices and light
enter your body;
recite their stories.
the earth will hold you
spring water flows
shadows of clouds
take the vast outside into yourself
I will walk with you
until you walk ahead and not turn back.

Becoming Readers

As I completed the sixth poem in this collection, I realized that each of these readers has a special relationship to reading. I suppose we all do. But I have observed the growing interest in these students. This time I have associated book titles with them.

First Seed

She is "Z" to us
Za'Kerrial, invisible realm
face like the sun
a first seed breaking open
a lark soaring over the meadow
A present and lovely treasure.

Flickering Star

Rumor has it she is brilliant
Among the multitudes that shine
The way Jesenia moves
A Star that often hides in the sky
Dimension of youth appealing
Lost, then found
Flickering

Winter Sun

like the winter sun
Lauren is white ocean sky
a blue edge
an arch
a warm south wind
drifting, curving, dancing

Being Berkley

Can she be any easier to
teach? -- Berkley is one --
the one -- open to learning like a
flower, interested, exploring, striving
to succeed at it all,
growing day by day.

The Measure of Matthew

Here is the measure
of a young man, this
"gift from God" Matthew,
he has a readiness
for learning and quiet...
composing in clear lines,
finding himself
in everything.

Falling In

It seems to be what she wanted
a place that all of us
long for, a book to
fall into. It was the look
in Flaurise's eye that told me
she had fallen already.

pointing toward the sky
pointing toward herself.

Year in Review 2024…and an Ending

For a while I have been finding it difficult to get myself to this blog. I will write entire things out in my journal that I think I want ...
