Inspired by Mary Biddinger's poem of the same name
My most beloved role
is as a creative writing
teacher, one who takes
each young writer for
the person they are,
helping them make
their poems just a
little bit better,
almost always
improving the ending--
they tend to stop
short--or pointing out
where a word is used
more than once, too
close together. They
smile that big smile
and I feel I have
given them the
gift of knowing that
yes, indeed, you
have something of
value to say.
